Diarrhoea is one of the most common conditions seen by vets. As in humans, diarrhoea in dogs is defined by typically frequent, soft to watery faeces and the condition can have numerous causes.
Symptoms
Symptoms include fluid faeces of varying consistency. The duration of the problem and the frequency and nature of the faeces can be helpful to record, because they may give the vet some clues as to the underlying cause of the problem.
What causes diarrhoea?
Diarrhoea is caused by a variety of reasons including parasites, bacterial and viral infections, dietary problems and sensitivities, metabolic diseases and intestinal conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBS).
Treatment
It�s advisable to withhold food after a dog has diarrhoea for up to 12 hours and gradually reintroduce a bland food in small portions. The dog should also be given small amounts of water regularly to ensure adequate hydration. If diarrhoea persists, contact your vet who will be able to advise on the appropriate investigation and treatment
